On the 2nd January 2013, we decided to apply for an allotment in our town, but after it taking nearly 3 years in our old town for getting an allotment we weren't expecting to hear anything for a while. So application handed in we waited.....
All of 3 days! On the 5th January (husbands birthday), I get a phone call. "we have allotments available, are you able to go down early in 2 days and decide which one you want!" They are fast workers in our town council!
Anyway husband goes down to visit and we had the option of 3 very different allotments, one was completely over run with weeds, rubbish all over it and no shed. The second was in a simpler state but with an ok shed that would last another season and the third one had a few weeds and came with a fruitcage, shed and some water butts.
It was a no brainer we went for the third one, so application filled in, cheque paid in, allotment 76 was ours! And all within a week of applying for one.
So all the hard work began, and we had some brilliant moment and some serious downs, sooner than we thought, including a theft of everything we did in the first 2 months (including our herb plants) to escaped bullocks eating all our crops, to gale force winds destroying our plastic greenhouse, she'd, crops and many more.
3 years on we have finally got a strong hand/s on the allotment and have decided to make it a sunny place for us to sit, rest and entertain as our rental has a shade postage stamp for a back garden.
So I've decided to blog about the allotment as well as all our bakes and makes from it as well as throwing in a number of crafty bits and teacher bits to help inspire you and give ideas for yourself and kiddies.
